this is not your mother's yoga

When most of us think of yoga, we conjure up images of people twisting themselves like pretzels, standing on their heads, or chanting funny sounding words. But yoga is so much more—and kids yoga is a lot different from the yoga that mom does.

Unlike adults, kids are natural born yogis. At any given moment, a child might crawl around like a snake, roar like a lion, stand tall like a tree, or walk on all fours like a dog. And this is a good thing, since most yoga poses come from ancient yogis’ observations of animals and nature. In kids’ yoga, the focus is less on the particulars of alignment and more on the experience of trying something different, stretching to new limits, and having fun in the process.

In a kids’ yoga class, children are invited into a world where breath work is taught using bubbles and pinwheels, and traveling into the jungle, surfing the waves, or flying through the sky like a superhero is as common as bending over and touching their toes.

But Yoga is not just about the poses - it's a way of life! There is much more to yoga than the physical postures. In fact, the poses, or asanas, are just one of eight limbs that make up the whole of yoga. This is a comprehensive yoga program dedicated to promoting the development of the whole child. Through the combination of mindfulness techniques, breathing exercises and yoga asanas, children will experience the physical, social, emotional and mental benefits of yoga.

Cultivating a child’s inner strength and emotional intelligence by relaxing the body and focusing the mind stimulates brain growth and helps them quiet their minds, calm their bodies, manage their emotions more effectively and maintain positive relationships--all of which will help them deal with life’s challenges, make better choices, and learn better.

Our goal is empower children by giving them strategies to calm and self-sooth themselves in all situations.

  • The importance of Play:  Yoga for kids is steeped in creative and imaginative play that help kids’ reach their developmental milestones.
  • Developmental stages and milestones:  Understanding a child’s developmental stage, any individual issues like sensory integration, ADHD, or unique learning styles will help teachers manage their class and better understand a child’s behavior.
  • How the Brain works: The Brain is not fully developed at birth. In fact, a child’s brain (in particular, the Pre-Frontal Cortex) is not fully developed until their mid-twenties, so what they experience on a day to day basis really helps to shape the brain. Early positive interactions with Charismatic adults are vital to the healthy brain development.
  • How to help Children Tune in, and cultivate their inner strength: External stimuli (i.e. media). and distractions draw our focus outward making it increasingly more difficult to establish an inner sense of calm.  We need to balance our bodies and mind by drawing our attention inward. This makes the brain healthier.  Cultivating a child’s inner strength and emotional intelligence by relaxing the body and focusing the mind stimulates brain growth.
